A PANTOMIME
From the book “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens
Loosely adapted by Alistair Clinton
Production dates: – 4th to 19th December, 2009
Little Theatre – Cape Town
As you can see by the multitude of characters and cameo’s below, that there is something for everyone. Pantomimes are always extremely fun to be in and a wonderful way to end the year by involving your whole family.
WHO – WHAT – WHERE – WHEN- ?
WHO: – THE CHARACTERS
Ebenezer Scrooge:- | Male Principal – Acting role with comic flare.
Grumpy, stingy and nasty. Would be nice if he could sing but not a necessity. |
Charles Dickens:- | Male Supporting – Acting role. Pompous Panto
Narrator – who loves telling bad jokes. |
Marley’s Ghost:- | Male Supporting – Acting, comic character and
not scary at all. Not too bright and an apprentice ghost. May double up as Ghost of Xmas Yet to Come (see notes below). |
Ghost of Christmas Past:- | Male Supporting – Acting comic character role.
1960’s 70’s “Austin Powers” rip off. |
Mrs. Slapan:- | Male Supporting – Acting Dame. From the Black
Sash who have completed many courses incl. First Aid and Karate. Fund raising for Christmas. Should be able to sing. |
Mrs. Tickle:- | Male Supporting – Acting Dame. From the Black
Sash who have completed many courses incl. First Aid and Karate. Fund raising for Christmas. Should be able to sing. |
Fezziweg:- | Male Supporting – Acting, dancing, comic, mix
between hippy, disco fevered afro’ed dancer singer. The party animal that gets the audience moving. Dance / sing / be funny |
Ghost of Christmas Present:- | Male Supporting – Big, jolly, roly polycharacter –
Full of the joys of Christmas (Father Christmas in look and character) – Can double as Mr Doughty – the butcher (see notes below)r. |
Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come:- | Male or Female Supporting – Non speaking part.
Rather spooky, totally shrouded figure (face is never seen) who just points. Double up as Ghost of Christmas Past or can be in Chorus. |
Funeral Pall Bearers:- | Male and Female Cameo’s – Four Cheeky ‘
Victorian Cockney’ type characters that carry Scrooge’s coffin to the cemetery. Sing and move. Would be great if 2 could tap dance (on the coffin of course)! 3 Double up as Ghostbusters. |
Ghostbusters:- | 3 x Male Cameo – Doubled up as Pall Bearers

Fred:- | Male Supporting – Actor – Scrooge’s likable nephew
– doubles as chorus member (in character) |
Sandra: | Female Supporting – Actress – Fred’s wife – well-
meaning dumb blond / Paris Hilton type character – doubles as chorus member (in character) |
Young Scrooge:- | Male Cameo – Actor – Very serious – obsessed with
money. Would be nice if could sing (add in a song). Age 20’s to early 30’s – doubles as chorus member (in character) |
Belle:- | Female Cameo – Actress / Singer – Young woman
who loves Young Scrooge. Sing love song. Age 20’s – doubles as chorus member (in character) |
Mrs. Cratchet:- | Female Cameo – Hardworking housewife who
hates Scrooge – doubles as chorus member (in character). Mother of squabbling teenagers. |
Emma Cratchet:- | Teenage Female Cameo – Squabbling teenager –
Age 14 to 19 – doubles as chorus member (in character). (Need double cast of this character) |
Gemma Cratchet:- | Teenage Female Cameo – Squabbling teenager –
Age 14 to 19 – doubles as chorus member (in character). (Need double cast of this character) |
Tiny Tim:- | Boy Cameo – Nice if could sing. Act as cripple
with only one line repeated -doubles as chorus member (in character). (Need double cast of this character) |
Mr. Smithers:- | Male Cameo – Actor – Pompous upper class
Victorian snob – Christmas guest of Fred & Sandra’s – doubles as chorus member (in character). |
Mrs. Smithers:- | Female Cameo – Actress – Pompous upper class
Victorian snob – Christmas guest of Fred & Sandra’s – doubles as chorus member (in character). |
Boy in Street:- | Teenage Male Cameo – Victorian street urchin
who sounds remarkably like a modern teenager – Dood! Bro! Doubles as chorus member (in character) . (Need double cast of this character) |
Mr. Doughty:- | Male Cameo – Butcher with prize turkey. Double
up as Ghost of Christmas Present and doubles as chorus member (in character). |
Victorian Mom with small girl:- | Female and child chorus member – Only in first
street scene. Ideal for a mother and a young girl (5 / 6 years of age). Would like to double (even treble) these 2 parts to accommodate only performing every 2nd / 3rd night) |
WHAT: – TO PREPARE
Principal and Supporting Roles
Please to choose either a short soliloquy or poem (or both if you like) that emulates the character/s that you are auditioning for. You may audition for more than one.
If you are auditioning for any of the characters below – please could you prepare a song that will show off your voice. Please bring sheet music for the pianist to accompany you or you may bring a cd / tape as your accompaniment.

Please to choose either a short nursery rhyme or poem that emulates the character/s that you are auditioning for. You may audition for more than one.
Please sing a Christmas Carol of your choice. Piano accompaniment will be supplied.
If you are auditioning for any of the characters below – please could you prepare a song that will show off your voice. Please bring sheet music for the pianist to accompany you or you may bring a cd / tape as your accompaniment.

Everyone will be taught a little disco, boogie dance at the audition, so please wear suitable shoes.

Sunday, 24th May:- 2:00 to 5:00 (14h00 to 17h00)
You will be advised within 3 (three) days after the audition whether you are needed at the call back. If you are not called back, this does not mean that you have not been successful.
