January 2018 – Number 176

Hi everyone!

Happy New Year! I hope 2018 will bring you all the success and happiness you could want.

AGM

A reminder that the CDS AGM will be held on 27 February at 19h00 at Barristers in Newlands. Hope to see you all there!

AUDITION: Billy Liar

Billy Liar – a comedy by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall

Date: Sunday 11 March

Time: 2:30pm

Venue: The Hok, Thicket Road, Claremont

Production run: 25 May – 02 June at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg

Synopsis of the play:

Bored with his job as an undertaker’s clerk and life at home with his family, Billy Fisher takes refuge in his own invented world, which makes his life tolerable, but intolerable for everyone else around him. He lies his way in and out of every situation, creating tensions at home with his parents and ailing grandma, trouble at work with missing money, as well as romantic problems with the three very different girls he’s promised to marry.

Director Lynn Moss is looking for serious actors to bring out the comedy in the following characters:

  • Billy Fisher – (to look on stage Age 18-25) Lead Role. Multifaceted character needing strong acting skills.
  • Alice Fisher – (Age 45+) Lead Role. Billy’s loving and devoted mum, who is the quiet strength and hub of the family.
  • Geoffrey Fisher – (Age 45+) Lead Role. Billy’s dad, the blustering head of the household with no time for Billy’s fantasies.
  • Florence Boothroyd – (Age 70+) Support Role. Billy’s Grandma, suffering from old age and dementia in her own shrinking world.
  • Arthur Crabtree – (Age +/- 25) Support Role. Billy’s friend, sidekick and work colleague, who covers for Billy and his lies.
  • Barbara – (to look on stage Age 18-25) Support Role. Billy’s fiancée, a stolid and down to earth type of character.
  • Rita – (to look on stage Age 18-25) Support Role. Billy’s fiancée, a working class loud and extrovert girl.
  • Liz – (to look on stage Age 18-25) Support Role. Billy’s true love, who also has dreams, she radiates warmth and generosity.

This earthy and hilarious story was a successful book, play, movie and TV series. Set in an industrial town in the North of England in the 1960s, passable Yorkshire accents will be required.

Backstage opportunities:

  • Stage Manager
  • Production Secretary
  • Props Master
  • Lighting and Sound Operators

Newcomers are welcome for both acting and backstage roles.

For more information or to book your audition, contact Lynn Moss on 021 785 2466 or 084 701 8360 or email lynn@infomotion.co.za

AUDITION: Comedy of Errors

CDS will also be presenting Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors this year. The show will be directed by Santie du Toit and Matt Roy.

Date: Saturday 17 March

Time: 2pm

Venue: The Hok

Production dates: 12-20 October

(You may think this is a bit early for auditions but there is a reason for that: Santie is currently pregnant and wants to get the auditions out of the way and make sure the cast is set before the baby arrives in April.)

Baby!

Speaking of babies, Sheldon and Genevieve Cross welcomed theirs into the world in December:

Congratulations, guys!

Director’s tickets

We need new directors for our CDS productions. If you are interested in directing, we’d love to have you! All you need to do is stage a short play or play extract at a members evening to get your director’s ticket. For more information or to propose a play, contact our members evening convenor Matt Roy (contact details at the end of this newsletter).

Digital archive

I am still working my way through the Hok’s collection of old programmes, photo albums, posters and DVDs and am constantly updating the list of CDS (and previously SoE) productions. Please have a nose through when you have a moment and let me know what you think: http://claremontdramatic.weebly.com.

See you at the theatre!
