Dear Friends and Members,

I hope you’re all enjoying the warm weather, and have finally settled into a normal work routine again. It’s almost that time again when our AGM (Annual General Meeting) rolls around, so keep your eyes peeled for the dates below.

In other society news, we’re almost finished with the CTP website, which will have more information about our wonderful society, and as always, we’re continually striving to make things easier for you to interact with us, and keep you informed about the Masque Theatre shows, auditions, and more!

AGM and CTP Members Eve – 4th March at 19:30

This year, our Constantiaberg Theatre Players Annual General Meeting will take place on the 4th March, at the Bergvliet Guide Hall. So we’d love to invite you to an evening of fun, food, games, and of course the exciting Adjudication of the 2013 CTP productions, which will be done by our lovely Lieske Bester and Colleen Van Staaden. This evening will also likely include a play excerpt, and if there’s time left after all the merry making, some Theatre Sports for those who’d like to show off their improvising talents. Good food, drink, and great company are to be expected as per usual, and of course the selection (or re-election) of the committee.

1 February – BINGO Afternoon
Saturday: 14:00 for 14:30
Available only to those over 18 years of age, the Masque Bingo event is set to be a day of classic fun and friendly competition, where you can win cash and spot prizes! All proceeds will go towards the Masque Theatre Roof Fund. 10 games of bingo will only cost you only R70. Drinks and snacks will be on sale, and there will also be a raffle. Please bring a highlighter or Bingo Dabber.
1 – 2 February – Lessons in Love
Saturday and Sunday: 20:00
Those who have yet to see the nostalgic and hilarious 1920s trip, should come along to enjoy an evening of laughter and song, with comedy sketches from the pen of legendary American wit DOROTHY PARKER who was known for her quips like “Men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses”. Devised by Margaret Hill and directed by Celia Musikanth, the show stars Pamela Burger, Kelly Kowalski and Gary Green with vocals by Aubrey Hindle and John Aron at the piano. So come along for a sparkling evening of fun! Come along in 1920 style or just as you are, but DON’T MISS OUT!
5- 8 February – Les Sylphide (Cape Town Ballet)

For those who are fans of classic ballet, come and see the beautiful Les Sylphide which is followed by the best of Belles & Beaux at the Ballet. Cape Town city Ballet delivers unique, world-class dance entertainment through integrity, creativity, and excellence.
14 February – A Valentine’s Soiree
Friday: 19:30 for 20:00
For those after some memories of love, lust and duets, come along to the Masque’s own Valentine’s Soiree, and see a variety of love-related songs, dances, and performances. Love’s a many splendid thing, for “who so loves, believes the impossible”. Please note dinner is included in the R100 ticket price, and as seating is limited, booking early is recommended.
15 February – Volunteer Co-ordination Saturday afternoon

Those of you who were unable to attend the initial volunteer co-ordination even on the 18th of January, should definitely come along for a meet, greet, and something sweet taking place at the Masque Theatre, on Saturday the 15th of February. 21 February – 1 March – Private Lives
Thursdays and Fridays: 20:00
Saturdays: 14:30 and again at 18:30
Written from his sick bed in Shanghai, in 1930, Coward said that ‘Private Lives’ tells “the sophisticated tale of a couple who can’t live with or without each other”. In typical Coward fashion, the play is liberally sprinkled with fast and hilarious repartee and the hint of farce. When it opened to packed houses on Broadway, the New York review noted of the principals, “They are only adults under the skin. They are really sulky adolescents on long legs and the humour they distil is infectious and superb.”

14 – 22 March – Flat Spin
Thursdays and Fridays: 20:00
Saturdays: 14:30 and again at 18:30
If you combine an incompetent electrician, a mouse, and aspiring model, and an Italian film director who can’t speak English, and throw in a walk-in cupboard, you’ve got the recipe for a hysterical audience pleaser. This classic British farce includes mistaken identities and cover-ups.

16 March – Masque Market
Sunday: 10:00 – 14:00
After the success of our last market, we’re holding another one, with plenty of stalls selling jewellery, candles, preserves, creams, décor items, food stalls, a white elephant stall, artworks, and books, and so much more! A raffle will be taking place again and stall holder fees will be going towards the Masque roof fund. KARAOKE FRIDAY 13TH DECEMBER

What a huge success! Gary Fargher was a great D.J. with fantastic music choices and his mischievous sense of humour he kept us laughing and singing until we were all hoarse. After witnessing some fairly dreadful Karaoke on the MSC Opera, I wasn’t too optimistic – I couldn’t have been more wrong. Everyone got into the spirit of Christmas with hats & outfits (Clara Machado’s was really fun). There wasn’t a shy singer in the house. And they were all pretty damned good – who would have thought Graham Leverton could sing like that? Thanks Gary, and thanks to you all for a lovely Christmas party.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This is your opportunity to find out all the nitty gritty details of how the society has been run throughout the past year, the ups and the downs, the financials, the shows and what has been planned for the coming year. It is also time to consider whether you want to hang onto the Committee Members who are willing to stand for re-election or whether you want to get rid of us. The following people are prepared to remain: Glyn Fogell (Chairman), Chris Laurie (Treasurer), Tanya March (Secretary), Tina Gough, Graham Leverton, June Wells (AdLib). If you do re-elect them, we will need two more people to fill the vacant seats of Karin Matthee and Brian Winter so please think about coming on board or nominating a friend.
This is also your time to officially voice your opinion and make suggestions that will be Minuted for eternity. You will be receiving formal notification as well as the Agenda soon. But please put this date in your diary now.
Subscriptions of R90 p.a.p.p. will not change and ARE DUE NOW. The banking details are given in the box at the bottom of the AdLib. Unless you
are a Paid-up-Member, Honorary Member or Life Member, you are not entitled to vote. Please note: subs paid late in 2013 will be allocated to 2014/15 – this includes all those new Members who joined at Flashmob as well as Lyle Wilson and Michelle Galloway.

MUSICAL FOR 2014
It’s been a while since we staged a major musical…..the last one being ‘Honk’ which seems like a lifetime ago. Hard to imagine that we were once the only society staging musicals! Your Committee has been doing the rounds in search of a theatre. Not easy, but we’ve found a gem. Our Musical for 2014 will be staged in Sept/Oct at the Magnet Theatre in Observatory. It does present some challenges, the major one being that the set has to be completely cleared after each performance because the acting space is used for training during the day. With ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ we will be able to do that without much trouble. We last staged ‘Joseph’ 11 years ago; besides being a hoot to be involved in, it was a very successful financially. There are 32 characters, (with doubling, 28). The set is made up of cut-outs on wheels, which add enormously to the fun of the show and also easy to move around on and off the stage. Lots of potential for actors of all ages to get their teeth into some fabulous characters, to get to dance and also to sing some amazing songs. Auditions will be held in June. The Committee watched the DVD of the 2003 show last night, which ignited our enthusiasm, pity we’ve got so long to wait for the auditions! We
need a rainbow cast of all ages for this colourful production – so watch out for the audition dates and bring us your talent.

CANDLELIGHT SUPPER THEATRE NIGHTS AT THE PINELANDS TOWN HALL
We are still looking for proposals for two supper theatre nights. They are fun to do and well supported, which is very rewarding. We have all the infrastructure from the stage to the lighting – and there is always a cash bar and a pretty good dinner. The first is in July and the second in November. If you have ideas for a show, please contact Tanya on tanya@march.za.net. Come on folks, don’t be shy

THE NEWEST ‘LITTLE’ THEATRE IN TOWN!
There are many small new theatres that have sprung up in Cape Town – the latest being The Rosebank Theatre, Nicholas Ellenbogan’s delightful new space in Alma Road. Now we have our own – a small stage, great lighting, sound, wings and it seats 40; this is what we’ve created in the Clubhouse. We invite you to take advantage for your production. We’ve already staged Graham Leverton’s two plays and they ran for 3 nights to full houses. Talk
to us about your ideas for using our ‘theatre’. Its a great opportunity to try out a play, musical or revue you’ve written (as long as it’s small!). Contact any of the Committee Members (box at bottom of this AdLib) if you’d like to come and have a look.

Greetings All,

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and can you believe the holidays are already over? It is the start of a new and wonderful year. I feel as though I have just arrived home after a long vacation and everything that used to seem so every day now seems very foreign. So forgive me if some of the news is a little late or old – we are sure to catch up in no time…and from what I can tell, my inbox is full of exciting happenings for 2014.

AGM Notice 2014

Our AGM and Awards Evening will be on Tuesday 25 February at Barristers. We will be sending out the official notice and agenda soon, but please put this date in your diary in the meantime.

Private Lives

Rehearsals for our first show of the year start again this week. Wendy watched one of the rehearsals last year and was very impressed with what she saw. Director John has some really wonderful ideas!

Bingo Afternoon

New Member

Some of us met our newest member, Setarah (Seti) Rajanei at our Christmas Party. Welcome Seti, and we hope your stay with us will be long and happy!

Volunteer’s induction training

Volunteer orientation courses are scheduled to take place this Saturday, January 18th at the Masque at 1.30 pm with a repeat of the programme the following month on February 15th at the same time.

These afternoons are aimed at all volunteers, not just new ones, as there are various changes coming up this year at the Masque, mostly involving Front of House people in regard to Box office and Tea duties etc… and we think it is important that everyone knows what is happening. There will also be a brief history of our theatre, as well as an outline of who’s who on the board etc… and an explanation of the new indemnity and waiver forms. We are hoping to make it an informative and fun afternoon for everyone.

The actual workshops for FOH volunteers as well as First Aid and Fire and Safety training will all take place at another time.

All those who are able to attend the first Saturday afternoon please let Jane Cohen know at jane@masquetheatre.co.za as numbers are limited.

Directions : From Ladies Mile Road turn left into Children’s Way (first traffic light from Main Rd), then immediately right into Glen Alpine Way, which bends left at Bel Ombre Road before continuing right to the end of the road. The guide hall is on your right opposite the car park.

Production dates: 16 – 24 May 2014

Rehearsals: Sunday afternoon, Monday and Wednesday evening commencing 24 February.

About the play…

Set in 1985 in the north of England, this wickedly observant comedy finds Dennis, on the eve of his birthday, making a last ditch attempt to break away from the confines of his middle class existence and marriage to Pauline. Feeling imprisoned in a suburban housing estate, he gets his revenge on life by vandalising the neighbourhood. When the ‘it’ couple from next door, Roger and Jane arrive, bearing gifts that epitomise the hated way of life, he reaches breaking point and packs his bag to go…

Characters …

(All characters should be aged 38 to 55)

Dennis Cain: At the outset he seems to be resigned to a boring existence, of domesticity, which he counters by secret vandalism. His sense of mischief is the one thing that for him makes his life bearable. He has a simmering frustration which builds during the play and results in him ‘losing it’.

Pauline Cain: Content with the existence that Dennis despises, all Pauline wants is to be socially accepted, look after her family, and ‘keep up with the Joneses’. She constantly tries to keep Dennis in check and stop him from embarrassing her in front of Jane, who she is desperate to be like.

Roger Fuller: He is something of a ladies man, and a complete charmer. A man who likes to be liked, and a peace keeper, Roger is happy where he is in life, and enjoys his status on the estate. He also thinks himself head of the household, but Jane knows different.

Jane Fuller: This is what Pauline aspires to be like. Jane is self assured, controlling and thinks herself the best hostess there is. She sees herself and Roger as the number one couple on the estate. There is nothing that Jane doesn’t know, and she feels that her role in life is to organise and give advice to others.

N.B. This is an adult British comedy. It needs British, preferably northern, accents, and impeccable comic timing and delivery.

Valentine’s Day Revue

The Masque Theatre is holding a Fundraising Valentine’s Day Revue on 14 February and we need YOU to Sing, Dance, and Perform on the evening. The theme is all about love: innocent love, unbridled passion love, set to music, prose, dance or whatever human trait appertaining to the universal language of love. The setting will be a romantic bistro in Paris (the “City of Love”) with French food and music.

Directed by Barrie Howard this will be a ton of fun so don’t miss your chance to take part! Enquiries to Barrie on 0217152777. Auditions were held on the 11th January , but if you are interested, please contact Barrie, and he will make a plan for you to audition. Rehearsals start this Thursday. Bring music or your performance piece.

Production date: 23-30 May 2014

An aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you”—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd”—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on. His continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence—a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising “twist” ending of the play.

Axel Hammond (mid 30’s to early 40’s): Art Critic, pretentious, often-inebriated, always ready with a sarcastic comment. (Large part)

Rick Steadman (mid 30’s to early 40’s): The titular “nerd”, oblivious to insults, lacks manners and sensitivity. (Large part)

Warnock Waldgrave (mid 40’s to early 50’s): Boisterous, slightly dim businessman, no creativity and no tact. He never smiles. (Medium part)

Clelia Waldgrave (mid 30’s to early 40’s): Mr. Waldgrave’s high-strung, put-upon wife. (Medium part)

Thor Waldgrave (8-10): The Waldgraves’ terror of a son. “Poster child for planned parenthood,” This could be played by a girl as well. (Small part)

Backstage & technical people will also be required for stage management, props, costumes, lighting & sound design & operation, set building & painting and rehearsal prompt.

SO much going on!! Here’s your first missive for 2014!

On 23 January 1951 Groucho Marx (born Julius Henry Marx on 2 October 1890)

won the Emmy Award as most outstanding television personality of 1950.

MASQUE VOLUNTEERS COURSES

Jane Cohen has asked me to remind you about the forthcoming orientation courses that are scheduled to take place Saturday, 18 January, at the Masque at 1.30 pm with a repeat of the programme on 15 February at the same time. These afternoons are aimed at all volunteers, not just new ones, as there are various changes coming up this year at the Masque, mostly involving Front of House people in regard to Box Office and Tea duties, etc, and it is important that everyone knows what is happening. There will also be a brief history of our theatre, as well as an outline of who’s who on the board and an explanation of the new indemnity and waiver forms. We are hoping to make it an informative and fun afternoon for everyone. The actual workshops for FOH volunteers as well as First Aid and Fire and Safety training will all take place at another time. Please could all those who are able to attend let Jane know (jane@masquetheatre.co.za) as numbers are limited.

AUDITION!!!

Constantiaberg Theatre Players is holding an audition on Sunday 19 January 2014 at 14h30 for One For The Road by Willy Russell to be directed by Lynn Moss. The audition will be at the Bergvliet Guide Hall and the production runs at the Masque in May 2014 with rehearsals commening 24 February. The cast for this wickedly observant comedy consists of two men and two women between the ages of 38 to 55, all of whom need British (preferably northern) accents and impeccable comic timing and delivery. In typical Coward fashion, the play is liberally sprinkled with fast and hilarious repartee and the hint of farce. Witten from Coward’s sickbed in Shanghai in 1930, Private Lives is considered as his finest comedy and a “pure statement of Coward’s genius”.

Birthdays in January start with Kirsty Cunnington on the 2^nd followed by Shelley de Klerk on the 8^th. Andrew Blake and Wolfgang Thomas share the 19^th with Marc Jacquest celebrating on the 21^st. Ron Carr rounds out the month on the 29^th (and boy is he thrilled to be spending it at our AGM!) The birth flower for January is the carnation (my favourite flower incidentally), the botanical name of which is Dianthus Caryophyllus. Scholars cannot agree on where the name carnation came from: some believe that it came from the Latin word “carnis” which means flesh and refers to the original colour of the flower; religious scholars believe that it comes from the word “incarnation” referring to the incarnation of God made flesh; still others believe that “carnation” was derived from the word “coronation” and that it was used in early Greek ceremonial crowns. An interesting titbit: At Oxford University it is customary to wear a Carnation to an exam: white Carnations are worn to the first exam, red to the last, and pink Carnations to every exam in between!

About the play…

Characters …

(All characters should be aged 38 to 55)

Dennis Cain: At the outset he seems to be resigned to a boring existence, of domesticity, which he counters by secret vandalism. His sense of mischief is the one thing that for him makes his life bearable. He has a simmering frustration which builds during the play and results in him ‘losing it’.

Pauline Cain: Content with the existence that Dennis despises, all Pauline wants is to be socially accepted, look after her family, and ‘keep up with the Joneses’. She constantly tries to keep Dennis in check and stop him from embarrassing her in front of Jane, who she is desperate to be like.

Roger Fuller: He is something of a ladies man, and a complete charmer. A man who likes to be liked, and a peace keeper, Roger is happy where he is in life, and enjoys his status on the estate. He also thinks himself head of the household, but Jane knows different.

Jane Fuller: This is what Pauline aspires to be like. Jane is self assured, controlling and thinks herself the best hostess there is. She sees herself and Roger as the number one couple on the estate. There is nothing that Jane doesn’t know, and she feels that her role in life is to organise and give advice to others.

N.B. This is an adult British comedy. It needs British, preferably northern, accents, and impeccable comic timing and delivery.
