April 2014 – Number 132
________________________________________

Greetings All,

Another month and so much has changed I really don’t know where to begin. As this is a packed chat with plenty of happenings and news I will get on with it…

A word from Simon Dutton

As most of you I’m sure are aware, Wendy Goddard and her partner Bob Goode, are relocating to Umtata for a period of three years, and as such Wendy has had to step down from her duties as Chairperson of our Society after such sterling service in the position in recent years.

Wendy will be sadly missed not only in her role as chairperson but in all those other things she does for our Society and the local dramatic community as a whole.

However this is an adventure for Wendy and Bob and I’m sure that our common sentiment is that whilst we will miss them much we also wish them very much the best of fortunes and fun.

In the interim, till the AGM, the Vice Chairman and Hok Manager, Simon Dutton, will take on the role of Chairman of the Society and deal with all matters pertaining directly with the Society and the Hok. The Treasurer, Anthony Storr Lister, will deal with all matters CDS related externally i.e. The Masque & the Dramatic community as a whole.

Wendy has expressly requested that there is not a designated farewell for her, but has said that all those that want to say to her in person ‘Bon Chancé and Bon Voyagé’ can do so at either or both of the following events:

• CDS Members’ evening Friday 2nd May 2014 at the Hok,
• Masque Roof Replacement Fund Raiser “Quiz Night” – Saturday 10th May 2014 19h00 at the Masque don’t forget to book!

Cape Amateur Theatre Awards

The CATAs have come and gone and we are proud to announce our winners:

Ryan Mitchley, Kim Randleff-Rasmussen, Grant Böttcher & Gary Fargher for Technical Excellence for Sound and Effects, and Henceforward… for Best Play, two very prestigious awards.

Congratulations to all!

Members Evening Friday 2 May

The next members evening will be held on the 2nd of May at 19h30 for 20h00. It will be a fun and exciting quiz night hosted by Simon Dutton.

Maximum 4 people per team. Don’t worry if you can’t make up a team – we will find you a home for the evening. Non-members are welcome to take part, and supporters are welcome. The emphasis is more on fun than intellectual expertise. This evening will be a voorsmakie of the type of question you can expect for the Masque Fundraising Quiz which will be held on Saturday 10 May. For catering purposes, RSVP to Pamela before Tuesday 29 April on 021 657 5793 (o/h) or pamb@masterparts.com. There will be fun spot prizes throughout the evening. No charge for members, R10 for non-members.

Acting workshop

I will be offering acting workshops every Saturday in June. These workshops will aim to help newcomers and old. The workshops will entail basic voice and body work, text analysis, character development and at the end of workshops you will be adjudicated and will receive a certificate of attendance at final performance/exam.

Sheldon Cross has an undergraduate degree from the University of Stellenbosch and an Honours degree from UCT (both cum laude). He has had great success in his directing projects which include A Delicate Light (Alexander Bar upstairs 2014) and Kismet (Out the Box Festival 2011). He is currently the Drama teacher at Battswood Arts Centre in Grassy Park, where he teaches Grade 4 – 12.

The Hollow

The cast is cast, the rehearsals have begun and there is truly an air of excitement around this very promising murder mystery. We are looking forward to seeing the following members and newcomers treading the boards at the Masque in June: Christie Bellairs, David Sharpe, Fae Wheeler, Jenny Brandt, Dimitri Selibas, Ralph Kelly, Simon Dutton, Su Cunningham, Tayla van Blerck, Willie Blignaut, Sheldon Cross and Jana Botha

Quartet

Brenda has successfully cast for our final play of the year, Quartet, and again there is a wonderful mix of old and new faces: Aletta Loophuyt plays Jean Horton, Anthony Lister is playing Reggie, Brian de Kock is playing Wilf, Cindy Nixon is playing Cissie

Planning Ahead: 2015

With our first production of the year only just put to bed, can you believe that we need to start our planning for next year? Anyone who wishes to direct for CDS in 2015 should please contact Wendy on wendygoddard@xsinet.co.za, with a proposal, which should include the name of the play, genre, composition of cast (numbers and gender split), and preferred slot (beginning, middle or end of the year). Please let us have this information by the end of April, so that we can present the options to the Masque Productions Team before the end of May.

All of this forms the basis for another thrilling ride in the company of the world’s greatest detective, as he attempts to solve the murder whilst also avoiding his own.
