NEWSLETTER OF THE CAPE TOWN GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY
VOLUME 15 – ISSUE 3 – AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2008
Hi Folks,
Richard Sharland
Terribly sad news to report – Richard Sharland passed away on 02 July. Our deepest condolences go to Gwen and her family. I last saw him pottering happily about the rehearsal room, checking the layout of the apron, and cheerfully noting that there was far more space available, much to Kyla’s relief and Alastair’s, who strongly advised falling into the pit!
Richard’s plans, always meticulous and detailed, will no doubt materialise into the vision he had in mind (I could never visualise from lines and figures, that which he saw so clearly in his mind’s eye but could never withhold my admiration for the finished product). From working in cramped servant’s quarters, cutting timber (using drill and circular saw), to today’s professional set builders is a magnificent progression. But that was then! Every now and then Gwen would appear on the scene armed with freshly baked cookies and tea, for the hungry workmen. Thank you, Gwen, for your great kindness. Richard, amongst a myriad skills was also a gifted quilter. His most recent work was an extension to a multi-floored model house; a guest house alongside with miniature furnishings in finest detail in the word and thought that only Giles, the English Cartoonist, packed as much detail into his work. May Richard rest in Peace.
