Hi Everyone!
Nice to be with you again. Firstly, I am sure you join me in sympathies to Dee Hewett and Jill Mitchell on the sudden death of Jill’s mother and Dee’s Granny, Daphne. She was the most optimistic and cheerful person I’ve met. I know they’ll miss her enormously. It’s probably raining – a good excuse to grab a hot cup of something and just remember, we’ll be glad of all this bounty from the sky come the hot, dry summer.
FEEDBACK ON FRIDAY 13TH
Well now, it just shows you…..what terrified us in the early sixties, turned out to be not so scary in the noughties! Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’, although still a well crafted thriller was tame compared to the blood and gore we see on TV now. John Gavin still looks hunky though, and Anthony Perkins’ performance is amazing. Strangely enough, the only actor nominated for an Oscar was Janet Leigh – she of the structured, pointy bras (Madonna must was taking notes). Witches hats, masks, sheets and gluwein added to the fun and witty quips and blood curdling screams abounded. Huge thanks to Scott and Mandy for setting up the big screen with projector and surround sound and also for making the gluwein. They’ve offered to do it again, so get your requests in for movies and we’ll see what we can do.
LOST PROPHETS
Tall, Titian-haired, Committee Member and wonderful actor, Sean Drummond, graduated from UCT Film School last year. Together with fellow graduate Dylan Valley he has linked up with others and formed Be Phat Motel, a film production company. But before that, Sean and Dylan made a documentary last year at UCT; their brief was for a 20 minute film. But they say ‘…the stories these guys were telling were so important and engaging, that we couldn’t cut it down.’ The result is an hour long film about the S.A. music industry and the group, Prophets of the City. POC made a huge splash some years back and then seemed to disappear. To find out what happened, go and see one of the screenings at the Waterfront on the following days: Tues 24th July 8.30 p.m., Sat 28th July 6 p.m. and Fri 3rd Aug 6.45 p.m. Tickets are R35. On a small budget, Sean and Dylan had to do everything: producing, directing, shooting and editing, working in shifts 24 hours a day. Well worth our support, I urge you to go along and see it
NEXT CLUBNIGHT – AND I’M HOSTING, SO YOU’D BETTER BE THERE OR I’LL WANT TO KNOW WHY!
MUSICAL QUIZ – AUGUST 17TH
Still busy compiling, but it will include music trivia, music from the shows as well as music from the 50’s to the 00’s. I have a theory about quizzes (or is it quizzes?): they should be fun and they aren’t about the NEXT CLUBNIGHT, cont………..‘quizmaster’ proving how clever he/she is (after all they’ve looked it all up anyway). There will be excellent prizes, including tickets to the opening night of ‘The Fantasticks’. We’ll have teams of two people each, which should make it a little more interesting! Please come and help make the evening great fun.
AND THE ONE AFTER THAT – HOSTED BY TED FAULKNER AND GRAHAM BOXALL
IMPROMPTU PLAY READINGS – 14TH SEPTEMBER
Impromptu play readings are huge fun: directors are picked by the hosts; you are given a script and a limited time to cast and prepare. This is really for everyone, you don’t have to be an accomplished actor and you don’t have to learn any lines; but for those of you who indicated that you’d be interested in getting involved in straight plays: here’s the chance for you to prove your enthusiasm! Graham and Ted will have a box of props and bits of costumes you can delve into. Even if you don’t want to participate, this is a hugely entertaining spectator sport! Be there.
ALSO IN SEPTEMBER:
We will be having a membership drive at Howard Centre. Jean McKenzie and the cast will present some music from ‘the Fantasticks’. we’ll also have display boards up with a pictorial history of the society. the aim is to let Pinelanders know we’re here if they don’t already! there will be a table with application for membership forms, etc. and we’ll be handing out fliers. we would really appreciate your help. once the date is booked, I’ll notify you. it is very important for the society to draw in new members and establish a larger ‘footprint’ in pinelands and we all need to pull together to achieve this.
OUR SISTER SOCIETIES: The only newsletters I seem to be getting lately are from MADS, Constantiaberg and Fishhoek Dramatic Society. Either we’ve been taken off the mailing list or they haven’t had any. Sometimes there are glitches when a new Scribe takes over. Please can anyone from G&S, Milnerton, Hottentots Hollands, Claremont and others do something to put us back in the picture? The info I’m giving you I’ve gleaned from Val Stephens, birga Thomas and Fiona Carling (thanks, ladies and bless ya).‘ART’ directed by Sue Bolton for FDS will be at the Masque from the 3rd to the 11th August.‘FARNDALE MACBETH’ – still time to catch this at the Milnerton Playhouse this week, runs until the 28th.
Tailpiece: congratulations to Nikki de Kock and also to Mandy & Scott on their first venture into the property market. It’s tough, kids, but bite the bullet and tighten the belts – it’s worth it! Also good luck wishes to Jack & Karin for their concert in September. We start rehearsals this week with a fantastic FANTASTICKS cast, can’t wait!Break a legLuvJune
