Hey Everyone!
Lots of exciting things in store. Never forget that you are the Society, without you it doesn’t exist. So get involved in everything. All it takes is an email or phone call. Has the kettle boiled? OkieDokie, put up your tootsies and read on.
THE PLAY READINGS 28TH September
Not a bad turnout, but it did not reflect the interest shown in ‘straight’ plays. So where were the rest of you, mmmmm? Nevertheless Laura Bosman and Greg Tinney were able to cast & perform their plays, which the audience thoroughly enjoyed. Huge thanks to Ted Faulkner & Graham Boxall who organised it all and well done to Laura, Greg & their casts.
CELEBRATIONSHottentots Hollands Dramatic Society, The Cape Town Gilbert & Sullivan Society and David Millar all celebrate their 60th birthdays this month. And they all have or will be, celebrating in style. Happy birthday! Pinelands Players’ turn next year. There are some ladies who are also celebrating special birthdays this year, but I will tactfully refrain from mentioning your ages Tina and Denise! If you would like to attend the G&S 60th Anniversary Masked Ball on the 3rd Nov, contact Yolande – Yolanda.Kotze@za.verizonbusiness.com.
COMPLIMENTARY TICKET PRIZESTo those of you who won tickets to ‘The Fantasticks’ at the Musical Quiz: please book your seats! (see details below).
AUDITIONS Teddy Davies is staging that wonderful Kander & Ebb musical ‘Cabaret’ next year in May for Festival Players. The auditions begin at 10.30 a.m. on the 4th Nov. at Artscape rehearsal room 301. Lots of meaty parts for singers, actors & dancers. For more information, contact Teddy on 083039603132.
HEATHER EARP-JONESI’m passing on all the good wishes received from you to Heather via this AdLib. Heather, you wouldn’t believe the amount of people wishing you well. I haven’t passed your number on, you’d never get to rest. So I promised I’d do this!
JILL MITCHELLDee’s Mum, Jill underwent surgery yesterday to remove a nasty little invader. All the best for a speedy recovery to full health from all of us, Jill.
IDOL CHATWhether you like it or not, Idols is fascinating. It’s good to see that Daniel Buys is still in; but I was very sad to see young PJ go. Wouldn’t it be great if Daniel won though? Mind you the judges seem to have a big influence on the gullible public and they are pushing Bjorn (he of the bum notes) and Jody (the Whitney Houston clone). What do you think? Keep voting for Daniel anyway…..you never know.
CLUBNIGHTSGearing up to opening night with ‘The Fantasticks’ means that the Committee have their hands full this month. And of course, the show opens on the 9th of November. BUT we are planning another Christmas bash which is always so popular. See the special item further on, giving more details on this and how to book.
Oh boy, this is such a talented cast. If you don’t see another show this year, don’t miss The Fantasticks! Roland (El Gallo) is an amazing find. He’s a powerful actor and singer, you are going to love him. Dee Hewett and Shaun Holley as the young, misguided lovers are just delightful and their voices soar in the songs. There is a lot of comedy. No, I mean it, a lot – Ben Smit, Ted Faulkner, Clifford Graham and Greg Tinney are truly, truly funny. You don’t often see Louis falling about with laughter – he did the other night at a rehearsal. Christine Thonissen as the impish Mute is everywhere – now you see her, now you don’t.Listen out for the ads on FMR, recorded by Roland and Clifford. I think they’re great.

Tailpiece
So much to do, so little time. But this newsletter isn’t a chore, I really enjoy sneaking into your letter boxes and computers and chatting to you. I hope you enjoy it as well.To all the students writing exams and their shattered parents & teachers trying to keep things together – good luck. And to all of you who are still dealing with the remains of the lurgies that attached themselves to us this winter, hope you shake it off soon. Still a very busy year ahead and again I urge you to participate. We have a great Society with spirit and energy and you are the engine that drives it. Please support ‘The Fantasticks’ you won’t regret it, it’s a theatrical gem.
